Jamar

Jamar Functional Reach Measuring Device Rolyan® Functional Reach Measuring Device The Jamar Functional Reach Measuring Device assesses a patients stability by measuring the distance the patient can reach straight ahead while standing in a fixed position. The device easily attaches to a door without tools. As well as includes a screening tool for balance improvement. The glide bar stays in place until the device is reset for ease of recording results Indications • For evaluating length of functional reach • For functional reach training • Can also be used for measuring range-ofmotion distance during wall stretches and wall walking Precautions • Use for test while patient stands only with patients who can stand for at least 30 seconds, in flat shoes or bare feet and without assistance or support. • Stability of bar should be tested after attaching unit to door and making adjustments as well as before each use. • Patient should be monitored for safety during test. • Door should be firmly closed and locked during use of device. • Device should not be used by patient as support. Care and cleaning Bar and glide can be cleaned with a hard-surface disinfectant and wiped dry NSTRUCTIONS for Use Functional reach can be measured while the patient sits or stands. These instructions are for a patient who is standing; they can be modified easily for a patient who is sitting. 1. Attach door attachment end of device to door at level of patient’s shoulder. To open door attachment, hold attachment firmly while turning bar counterclockwise. Tighten on door by turning bar clockwise. 2. Close and lock door. Extend bar and hold in position by putting pin through door attachment and bar. 3. Turn bar slightly as needed to bring appropriate units of measure to side of bar along which patient will reach. 4. Line up glide with starting line (or note initial position of glide). 5. Patient should stand in normal position with arm to be tested outstretched at a 90° angle to body. To provide clearance, the device should be along the outside of the arm (A). 6. With hand fisted, third metacarpal should be placed against glide. 7. Instruct patient to reach forward as far as possible without taking a step. 8. Record ending position of glide. 9. Patient may perform two practice trials before taking actual measurement of reach. In addition, test can be repeated three times. 10. If desired, device can be collapsed following use by removing pin and lowering bar. Balance was assessed using the functional reach (FR) test and one-leg standing (OLS) with eyes closed test. The FR test was performed using a Rolyan® Functional Reach Measuring Device (Sammons Preston). Subjects completed trials in a standing position adjacent to a wall with the test arm raised forward at 90° of shoulder flexion. The farthest distance (in cm) was recorded while subjects reached forward without taking their heels off the floor [29], and after practice, the mean value of two trials was used for analysis. In the OLS test, subjects completed trials by standing on one leg for as long as possible with the contralateral hip and knee both flexed at 90° and with their eyes closed [30]. The performance time was recorded until the suspended leg touched the floor, and after practice, the longest time of two trials was used for analysis. NSTRUCTIONS for Use
Functional reach can be measured while the patient sits or stands. These instructions are for a patient who is standing; they can be modified easily for a patient who is sitting.
1. Attach door attachment end of device to door at level of patient’s shoulder. To open door attachment, hold attachment firmly while turning bar counterclockwise. Tighten on door by turning bar
clockwise.
